I was 8 years old when I was given my first camera. Although I enjoyed
taking pictures, I didn’t get serious about photography until I was 25 and
took my first photography class. I work in both Black & White and
Color. I feel Black & White provides less distraction and allows the
viewer to enjoy and appreciate the composition. I used color to add
another dimension to my work, but I feel color needs to have a purpose in
the composition.
My favorite subjects are landscape and old architecture. Living in the
southwest I have access to some of the most beautiful landscape in the
world. In contrast to the soft forms of landscapes, I love the different
angles and shapes architecture provides as a subject matter. I am
especially inspired by older architecture, which tends to have a more
unique character. Occasionally I enjoy environmental portraits showing an
individual or group at work or play, unaware their photograph is being
taken.
Like most photographers who love landscapes, I’m inspired by the work of
Ansel Adams. I was in total awe of his work when I first studied
photography. Ansel’s photographs do not require color in order to
appreciate the beauty of the scene. Every time you examine one of his
prints you find something new. But my wife Barbara (a working artist) has
also inspired me in other areas. She has taught me to see, not to just
look at a subject. I have learned to observe the subject and to try and
understand the subject. I now look at a building or scene and see the
different angles and shapes, the parts of the whole.
I work mainly with Canon EOS cameras and lenses for both my film and
digital work.
I enjoy photography because it provides to me the ability to capture and
store images of moments and places that myself and others may enjoy for
years to come.
